SCREENING of GUBRADirected by Yasmin Ahmad
Screening Time - 5 o'clock on 25th of August 2006
Venue - Dewan Kuliah Utama Akademi Seni Kebangsaan
I was informed about this screening by invitations from R.Chong whoose currently doing a mojor study in writing at ASK but i remember telling him that i couldn't make it to join him as i'm working on that particular day during the screening time. Damn! For the record, Hishamuddin Rais is also invited for the discussion held after the screening.
I've seen Gubra and by most of Yasmin's film i've seen like Sepet and Muhsin, despite the fact that controversial win of her film during FFM Award last week, i got two words for her. She have guts. Okay sorry, make it three words then.
The IKEA sofa bed model is Mislina, amused by the plentyful of posters at Yasmin's office while others sit tight. As for me, i patiently and calmly waited for Syafiee. Did i Big Momma?
There was this once an opportunity i had seeing the directors cut of Muhsin. When i was there even before the screening, i knew what to expect. She is a nice lady who happen to have the angels face that the whole nation might hate her for it but on top of that, she really is doing it. Her film, i assume, may storm the whole of Malaya pleading them to smile and spare their happy moments and as the same time slapping themselves back.
I wouldn't be there if it wasnae because of Mislina Mustaffa who brought me there to actually see Shafie in person. He's really cute though. He was there at the screening with his family mom and dad and his sis. I was next to him but not really close, his father is there so as Sharifah Amani's family and her cute and adoreable sisters. Hardly remember coz there were like dozens of them.
My predictions are, by the upcoming month soon, all the spot light wouldn't just spark on Sharifah Amani alone as he'll get all the coverage too after Mukhsin hit the big screen.
Mukhsin is very much a continuation of a love story; Gubra and Sepet where Yasmin tend to stick to her idol Orkid. Mukhsin has it's strongness in which i would say it's a story of a malay family but may be odd malay kind of family in the public eyes but certainly she (Yasmin Ahmad) has always something to tell. Interestingly, the chracter, love between Muhsin and Orkid the whole one and a half hour long play was all about straightening differences, humourously. Imagining what life's would be without them. The set, the environment, everything you see is just so interesting.
If you may think what Yasmin is trying to do and passing the message around on Gubra or Sepet then the idea would probably be the same on Mukhsin. If there's a 5 star to rate Muhsin, i'll bet for 6 star then. Way to go Yasmin!
I'd love seeing her educating all other directors, to actually get Malaysian movie lovers, cinema goers a whole new beginning of the new era of thinking. Thinking to push themselves out of the typical malay syndrome attitude. Full stop.
